Work Requirement

Membership in the Cobble Hill CSA includes a work requirement. The CSA is a volunteer-run cooperative with no paid staff, and we depend on the help of our members to distribute produce each Tuesday. We have one of the lightest work requirements of any CSA (two 2.5. hour shifts for each annual registration) but responsible participation is critical to our operations.

For questions about the work requirement, please contact the CSA’s Work Coordinator, Simone, at 19paws [at] pobox.com.

General Notes About the Work Requirement

  1. Members register for their work shifts online. If your schedule changes and you become unable to complete a shift for which you previously registered, you are responsible for finding another member to cover this shift. You are also responsible for signing up for an alternate shift later in the season.
  2. While completing their work shifts, members may be asked to lift heavy items such as folding tables and boxes of produce. If physical labor is challenging for you, please notify the site supervisor so he/she is able to assign you to alternative tasks. Conversely, if you feel able to do some heavy lifting, please do not hesitate to volunteer!
  3. While completing their work requirements at the distribution site, members will not have time to take care of children. Please do not bring children who require constant supervision to your work shift. For clarification about this matter, please contact the Work Coordinator.
  4. If you can’t find a shift that fits your schedule and abilities, please contact the Work Coordinator for an alternate task.

Weekly Work Shifts: Description and Sample Tasks

Members looking to fulfill their work requirement may choose between three work shifts each Tuesday during the CSA season: 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., 3:45 p.m. to 6:10 p.m., and 6:00 p.m.to 8:25 p.m. An overview of the tasks required during each work shift appears below. Please note that the site supervisor may assign additional tasks during your work shift, if necessary.

Unloading Shift (10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.)
1. Help unload the farmers’ trucks and carry produce into distribution area
2. Set up produce on folding tables for evening distribution
3. Carry the previous week’s empty containers to the farmers’ trucks
One member needed weekly. Please note that it is absolutely essential to arrive on time for this shift. This shift requires heavy lifting, and may not end promptly at 12:15 if our farmers are delayed due to traffic conditions. You will be able to collect your share immediately after your shift ends, rather than returning to the distribution site in the evening for regular pick-up.

Set-Up Shift (3:45 p.m. to 6:10 p.m.)
1. Greet and sign in members as they arrive for pickup
2. Re-stock and tidy produce and fruit tables as needed
3. Supervise distribution to ensure that members take the correct allotment of each item
4. Assist members as needed
One member needed weekly. Please note that this shift may require some heavy lifting. Because of the tasks required, you may need to wait until your shift ends to collect your own share.

 Break-Down Shift (6:10 pm to 8:25 p.m.)
1. Greet and sign in members as they arrive for pickup
2. Restock and tidy produce and fruit tables as needed
3. Supervise distribution to ensure that members take the correct allotment of each item
4. Assist members as needed
5. Pack leftover produce at close of shift for food pantry
