About Green Thumb Farm Green Thumb Farm, located in Water Mill, Long Island, consists of 90 acres and has been farmed by the Halsey family since the 1640s. In 1978 Bill and Larry Halsey started growing environmentally friendly organic vegetables on three acres. Today, all 90 acres are certified organic. In spite of the challenges and expenses involved, Green Thumb Farm has made the commitment to be totally organic. The Halseys are members of The Northeast Organic Farming Association, NOFA, and active in their Long Island branch.
The Halseys continue to farm because they value raising their children in a rural environment, producing on land that has been in the family for generations, and preserving and improving the land for future generations.
In 1996, Green Thumb pioneered the CSA movement, when Farmer Bill established a relationship with the community here in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. More recently Farmer Bill passed that mantle onto the next generation, Farmer Ray who now manages their Queens and Brooklyn CSA.
