WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT A CSA?
The term “CSA” stands for “Community-Supported Agriculture” and is a food distribution system that directly connects farmers and consumers. Members buy “shares” of a farm’s harvest in advance and then receive a portion of the crops as they’re harvested.
What’s great is that with this model, farmers earn important early-season capital and have a guaranteed market for their produce. CSA members enjoy overall lower food costs, field-fresh produce, and greater access to high-demand fruits and vegetables. The money stays in the local community and travels just a few hours shortening the food chain and resulting in a lower carbon footprint. CSA members share the risks and rewards of the harvest with the farms they support and provide stability to the farmers by allowing them to plan in advance.
The Cobble Hill CSA (CHCSA) has supported Green Thumb Organic Farm in Water Mill, NY for the last 24 years making it the oldest CSA in New York City. The CHCSA is completely run by volunteers and does not handle any money, members pay the farms directly. Members agree to work 1-2 volunteer shifts aiding in distribution and other tasks over the course of the season. Green Thumb holds special events for members such as strawberry picking and farm visits.
WHAT WILL MY SHARE LOOK LIKE?
For 28 weeks (June 8 to December 14, 2021), members receive 5-7 items once per week, of the freshest, Certified Organic* seasonal vegetables grown on Green Thumb Farm in Water Mill, NY. (*Certified Organic by NOFA-NY, LLC)
As established last season, Green Thumb will be bagging shares for the 2021 season, thereby easing distribution contact and limiting the handling of produce.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
A weekly basic share from Green Thumb is $21.50/week.
There is a CSA annual membership fee of $25 which is used for web maintenance, rent to Christ Church and office supplies.

WHEN DO I START PICKING UP MY SHARE?
This first pickup date for the 2021 season is June 8
WHERE & WHEN WILL I PICK UP MY SHARE?
Christ Church, 326 Clinton Street (corner of Kane Street)
June 8 to December 14th
- Pickup will occur outdoors in the garden on the Clinton St side. Members will come to the table in the garden, give their names and receive their items.
- Please wear a mask and wait a safe distance away if you see someone already being helped.
TELL ME ABOUT WORK SHIFTS
Each CobbleHillCSA member is required to work 1-2 work shifts during the CSA season dependent on membership totals.
There are two shift options every week (two members per shift) and entail supervising box pickup outside by our members.
- Tuesday pickup opening shift 4:15 to 6:00pm
- Tuesday pickup closing shift: 6:00 to 7:45pm
After the 4 week sign up period ends, our work shift coordinator will send out an email to members, prompting them to select shifts that can work for them via our signup.com account.
CAN I BUY A HALF SHARE?
Green Thumb does not offer half shares but if members would like to split a share, that’s great! We often get inquiries about helping connect potential members who would like to split a share.
If you are interested in splitting and need a share partner, please email email@example.com with the subject “split a share” and we will compile a list of interested parties and connect you.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I’M OUT OF TOWN AND I CAN’T PICK UP MY SHARE OR IF MY CIRCUMSTANCES CHANGE AND I MOVE BEFORE THE END OF THE SEASON?
At any point, if you aren’t able to pick up your share or you no longer can be a member of the CSA, you are welcome to send a friend or a neighbor to claim it for you OR offer your shares for sale to the community.
You are also able to donate shares to Emma’s Torch, a local restaurant/non-profit in Carroll Gardens that provides culinary training to refugees, asylees, and survivors of human trafficking. Each week, if there are unclaimed shares at the end of the pickup window, they are donated to Emma’s Torch.
WILL I KNOW WHAT’S IN MY SHARE EACH WEEK SO I CAN PLAN MEALS?
Every Monday, we send out our newsletter which includes a list of items in that week’s delivery. The farmers often don’t know what they’ll be bringing to us until the last possible moment. Factors like what’s currently ripening and what’s ready to be picked go into the decision of what arrives. As soon as the farmers tell us, we tell you!
